Mission San Luis Rey, Oceanside, is California's largest mission. The orginal church was constructed by San Luis Rey beginning in 1798 on behalf of Spain as one of 21 California Mission Churches. The purpose of the Missions was to claim the land for Spain and to bring Christianity to Native Americans. It is one of only two Mission Chuirches bult in the shape of a cross.
